Valley Mall Shooting Suspect Charged With Attempted Murder In Maryland: Sheriff

A Washington County man has been charged with attempted murder after a shooting outside the Valley Mall, the sheriff’s office announced.

Hagerstown resident Matthew Steven Lookabaugh, 21, was apprehended by members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office after allegedly shooting a teen in the parking lot of the mall following an altercation.

A sheriff’s office spokesperson said that deputies were dispatched to the mall on Valley Mall Road at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 8.

Upon arrival, they located a 19-year-old teen inside Dick's Sporting Goods, who was treated by deputies until the scene was cleared for paramedics to respond.

The teen - whose name has not been released - was transported to Meritus Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. His condition was not immediately available on Thursday, June 9.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation led them to identify Lookabaugh as a suspect after he and a minor got into a verbal altercation with the victim that led to the shooting.

Lookabaugh was transported to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center and charged with:

  • First-degree attempted murder;
  • Second-degree attempted murder;
  • First-degree assault;
  • Second-degree assault;
  • Reckless endangerment;
  • “Several appropriate gun charges relating to this incident.”

He was scheduled to make a court appearance on Thursday in Washington County District Court.
